Does you inner reading voice, have an accent?

There's an old adage that says: "Never meet your heroes". And this quote can transcend into almost anything. Your literary heroines, your favourite authors, musicians, TV Soap star, your mind crush, your favourite blogger, because the realtiy is, whilst you love their "art", meeting them in real life may just disappoint you and not live up to your expectations.

Now I really hope I am not the only one in the Universe because frankly, I would be completely embarrassed BUT...

Does your inner reading voice, have an accent?

Whenever I read well written articles, blogs and books, my inner-reading voice looks like, Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and sounds like her too...

{Added note, since publishing. How could I forget? Thought provoking posts or morose readings, make my inner reading voice, sound like Bridget Jones}

One of the blogs I follow, is an incredibly successful woman, named Heather B. Armstrong. She is the woman behind the website DOOCE.com. Whenever I navigate my way through her extensive archive of posts, I usually read them with this British-Elizabeth-Bennett-type voice, that was up until I saw a Youtube clip of her at a conference. She sounds nothing like my inner reading voice, hence my reference to the adage "Never meet your heroes" or look them up on YouTube, for that matter.

Whenever I read a book that's poorly written, a "shouty" post with lots of exclamation marks and/or an article I don't agree with, my inner reading voice has several different accents:

Sounds sort of like these two.

Sometimes, looks sort of like this.

The "shouty" posts with lots of exclamation marks.

When I read well articulated, political posts, they all just sound and look like Hilary Clinton.

Like a boss
When I read posts on relationships, savvy, witty and/or funny articles, books, blog posts? They all sound like Carrie Bradshaw.

And when I read back on my posts? I just hear and see me.

Tell me? I am dying to know? Does you inner voice have an accent?

  1. Thats so funny, I often think the same. I think my voice is always just mine. Ill have to think more but I love that what I write is read in so many different ways. I use lots of exclamation marks so maybe people read my stuff in K&K style... I bloody hope not! Awesome post..... xxxx (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  2. Bahaha!!! I read your posts with my British-Elizabth-Bennet type accent and then when you throw in the aussie vernacular, like "bloody" I hear Lara Bingle!! I'm crazy. The mind is a funny thing.

  3. I want my inner reading voice to sound like Richard Fidler but I get a lot of Kath and Kim. There's a bit of Kath and Kim in all of us. I hope when people read Mumabulous they hear Annabel Crabb.

    1. When I read interior design magazines or food magazines, my voice turns into Kevin McCloud. From now on I will read your blog with Annabel Crabb as the narrator. Reading back on this post, I wonder how people may hear me? x

  7. This is such a great post - yes I do but I never thought I'd admit it! My book club just finished reading Jane Eyre and one of the girls said she couldnt stop reading it in a posh English accent and it was true, I was doing the same thing! Oh and Bridget, god love her, I can imagine her voice when I read that book too .... I choose vodka!
Saying hi from Blogs & PR link up :D
